Description
Arboritec Hard Wax Oil — Natural Oxidative Hardening Oil for Wood Floors
Hard Wax Oil works differently from lacquers and waterborne finishes. Rather than forming a protective layer on top of the wood, it penetrates into the surface fibres and hardens within them through an oxidative process, combining pine resin oil, linseed oil, and waxes to create a finish that is part of the wood rather than sitting above it. The result is a surface that looks and feels natural, repairs locally without visible patch marks, and builds genuine wear resistance from within the timber rather than relying on a surface film.
Arboritec Hard Wax Oil is formulated from renewable natural ingredients and carries no classification under CHIP regulations. It is suitable for all indoor wood types including hardwood and softwood floors, furniture, staircases, and internal joinery.
Why Choose Hard Wax Oil Over Lacquer
For floors where the natural character of the wood is the point, hard wax oil delivers what lacquer cannot. There is no plastic sheen, no surface build that changes underfoot feel, and no catastrophic failure when the finish is scratched or worn. An oiled floor wears gradually and gracefully, and local repairs can be made by sanding and re-oiling a small area without the visible witness lines that make patch repairs on lacquered floors so difficult. This is why hard wax oil remains the professional choice for high quality residential installations and restoration work where authenticity matters.
Suitable for Pre-Oiled Surfaces
Arboritec Hard Wax Oil can be applied to surfaces that have already been oiled. In this case apply a very thin layer to avoid surface build-up. This makes it a practical maintenance product for refreshing and reviving existing oiled floors as well as a new installation finish.
Gloss Level Adjustment by Buffing
The natural finish from application is satin. The gloss level can be increased by buffing the dried surface with a floor machine and an appropriate pad. This gives the installer control over the final appearance without changing the product or the application process.
Self-Ignition Warning
Oil saturated cloths, pads, and applicators can self-ignite through spontaneous combustion as the oil oxidises. This is a genuine fire risk that must be managed. After application, store all used materials submerged in water in a sealed metal container, or spread flat outside to dry completely before disposal. Never bundle or pile oil-saturated materials in a bin or enclosed space.

How to Apply
Sand the floor to bare wood, finishing with a sanding screen at grit 100.
Apply Arboritec Hard Wax Oil using a hard wax brush or short hair roller in a thin, even layer. Keep the product between 15 and 25 degrees C during application. Shake the can thoroughly before use.
Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 2 hours. If the surface feels rough due to grain raise, lightly sand with a screen at grit 120 and carefully remove all dust before applying the second coat.
Apply a thin second coat and allow to dry. Most hardwoods are fine to then resume traffic within 24 hours. For some exotics and cork it can be 24+ hours depending on conditions. It is critical that the oil is not applied too thickly as excess product will not cure correctly.
Gloss level can be adjusted by buffing once the second coat is fully dry.
Tools should be cleaned with white spirit before the oil has hardened.
Maintenance
Dry cleaning is recommended for all oiled surfaces. Clean when necessary with Arboritec Cleaner. Do not leave standing water on the floor. For worn or heavily used areas, maintain with Arboritec Satin Maintenance Oil. If maintenance oil does not restore the surface satisfactorily, sand lightly with a screen at grit 120 and apply a fresh coat of Hard Wax Oil.
